Chapter Ten

Marcia sighed. “Billy wasn’t Danny’s father,” she said. “He was Magdalene’s nephew.”

Rachel frowned. “Her nephew?”

Abigail nodded. “He inherited her estate and moved to Nightshade after her death.”

“I want to meet him,” Rachel said.

“You already have,” Marcia told her. “He works at the reception desk here a few days each week. He was here yesterday morning.”

“The Billy at reception is Billy Winters? I wonder if Danny knew that,” Rachel said thoughtfully.

“Billy usually just introduces himself as Billy,” Abigail said. “But if Danny had been looking for him, he might have known who he was.”

Rachel sighed. “Can you tell me anything about Billy?”

“I think it might be best if you talk to him yourself,” Abigail said. “He isn’t working today, but he’ll be here tomorrow.”

“You said that he inherited Magdalene’s estate,” Rachel said. “Was he close to his aunt?”

“Not at all,” Marcia said. “He didn’t even know he had an Aunt Magdalene until after her death.”

Rachel frowned. “I don’t understand.”

“Again, this would probably be best coming from Billy directly,” Abigail said.

Marcia nodded. “All I can tell you is what Billy told me. His father and Magdalene had a fight before Billy was even born. Whatever the fight was about, Billy’s father never once mentioned having a sister to Billy.”

Rachel slowly shook her head. “Was the family from Boston?” she asked eventually.

Marcia shrugged. “I don’t think so. Billy grew up in New York City, anyway. Actually, he grew up in the suburbs somewhere, but he tells everyone that he’s from the city.”

“So maybe Magdalene wasn’t from Boston,” Rachel said.

“Unless the family moved from Boston to New York before Billy was born,” Marcia said. “Since they kept Magdalene a secret from Billy, maybe they kept other things secret from him, too.”

“Is his father still alive?” Rachel asked.

Marcia shook her head. “He died a few years ago. His mother is still alive. She was the one who told him about the fight that his father and Magdalene had, but she didn’t know what they fought about.”

“I need to talk to Billy,” Rachel said.

“As I said, he’ll be here tomorrow,” Abigail said.

“I hate the thought of waiting that long, but I’d rather wait than have you call him and ask him to meet with me today. He probably has better things to do today than talk to me.”

“I believe he was going to Buffalo today,” Marcia said. “He said something to me yesterday about needing to get into Buffalo to do some shopping for things he couldn’t get locally.”

Rachel nodded. “Just because my life has been completely turned upside down doesn’t mean I can demand that other people change their plans to accommodate me.”

“What are you going to do today?” Abigail asked her.

She shrugged. “The weather forecast is excellent. It would be a perfect day to do some kayaking while the others just sit on the beach and soak up some sunshine, but I don’t know that I’m ever going to want to kayak again. Right now, I can’t even imagine going anywhere near the water.
